PSYCHIC INVESTMENT MIND OVER BUSINESS BY KATE DUNN STAFF WRITER
Sickeningly sweet, the smell of incense fills the Calgary hotel room of Yogi Albert Narayana, psychic investment advisor.
But incense is the only concession Narayana makes to the traditional ways of conducting a fortune telling business.
He combines a thorough reading of financial publications with statistical know how and a touch of extra sensory perception or is it plain old guess work? to come up with predictions on what investments will do well.
"It's all a very cut and dried, boring corporate affair." says Narayana, a heavily accented German by birth who also goes by the surname Maier, in a Sun interview during his week long stay in Calgary.
"If I acted like the old gypsy ladies and told my New York corporate clients they were once kings of the lost city of Atlantis, they would throw me out the window and you would have to scrape me up off the sidewalk,"he says.
"But why not apply ESP to business?" asks Narayana.
Why not indeed, with the shape stock markets are in today?
His predictions on the future of specific investments echo other investment analysts. Narayana says the psychic part of his profession comes in when he foretells world events, which have a bearing on where, when and how his clients should spend their money.
He claims success in anticipating the assassination of Anwar Sadat. A little over a year ago he said the Pope would die, too.
"Well, I can't be completely right. But he was shot at, Narayana says.
Gold is a good long range bet once it hits bottom at $280 an ounce. Sell off Canadian dollars for German deutchmarks and Japanese yen. Keep out of real estate because interest rates will stay high for some time, says Narayana.
The federal government is going introduce a new budget in four months, devalue the dollar down to 74 cents US and introduce wage and price controls, he says.
Al Sands will not be rescued by Ottawa, Dome Petroleum will balance its books in the next two months by selling assets and shares to mid East sheiks, and the price of oil will recover by the end of next year he says.
On the international scene, Narayana says Reagan's budget director, David Stockman will be out of a job by December.
